Wordstat search operators — quotes, the exclamation mark and minus
By default, Wordstat counts demand broadly: the number for "travel mug" includes "buy travel mug", "travel mug emsa 0.5 liter", and hundreds of other queries containing that word. Operators narrow the count down to what you actually need — without them it's easy to mistake someone else's demand for your own.
Five operators
- Quotes
"phrase"— lock in the word set: only these words, nothing extra, but in any word form or order."travel mug"cuts off every long tail. - Exclamation mark
!word— locks in the word form: number, case, spelling."!travel mug"counts exactly that form, not "travel mugs" or any other variant. - Minus
-word— excludes queries containing that word.travel mug -buystrips out commercial long tails. - Plus
+preposition— forces Wordstat to count stop words (prepositions, conjunctions) it normally ignores.thermos +for coffee. - Grouping
(a|b)— cycles through variants inside one phrase.buy (travel mug|thermos).
What it's for
The main use of operators is telling real demand for a phrase apart from inflated broad-match numbers. Compare the number with no operators to the number in quotes with "!": a big gap means real direct demand for the phrase itself is low, and the number is inflated by related and manipulated queries. These are the "empty" queries from the chapter on search-query statistics.
