The best AI agents and agent platforms: 2026 comparison
The short version: there is no best platform for everyone. For an agent "for yourself" with no code, agent builders such as Twelver. For automating processes across services, n8n. For a bot on your website, Botpress. For a ready-made agent that browses for you, ChatGPT's agent mode. Answer four questions and the ranking below rebuilds itself around you.
Find your platform in four questions
An honest ranking: every row shows what earned its place and what holds it back.
1What should the agent do?
2Happy to deal with technical settings?
3Do you have your own server?
4Should the agent run on its own, on a schedule?

Four kinds of solution
Very different things are sold as an "AI agent", and comparing them head to head is like comparing a taxi with a car dealership.
- Ready-made agent — you set the task and the agent does it. There is almost nothing to configure. Example: ChatGPT's agent mode.
- No-code builder — you put your own agent together from instructions and ready tools. Examples: Twelver, Botpress.
- Automation — the agent is one node in a workflow that is triggered by an event in another service. Example: n8n.
- For developers — services and frameworks for building an agent into your own product. Examples: Flowise, LangChain, the OpenAI Agents SDK.
The platforms
Twelver — a no-code agent chat
You build the agent in an editor: a system prompt, tools ticked from a list (search, documents, presentations, images, video, voice-over, transcription, Python), a knowledge base from your files, memory across chats and scheduled runs with a push notification. On the Premium plan agents can be combined into a team, where a lead agent hands out tasks to helpers.
Strengths: everything in one agent, from research to an image and a deck; ready agents and templates. What it lacks: ready-made integrations with CRMs and email — for "lead → CRM → email" workflows n8n is the better choice.
n8n — automation with AI agents
A workflow builder with an AI Agent node and hundreds of integrations. The agent becomes part of a process: an email arrives, the agent reads it, logs the deal in the CRM and replies to the customer. Community Edition is free on your own server; the cloud is paid.
Strengths: integrations, control, self-hosting. Weaknesses: the learning curve — flows, API keys, a server; models and media generation are wired in separately.
Botpress — bots and agents for your website
A visual builder for support agents on your website and in messaging apps, with a free plan. The one to pick if what you need is a widget on your site.
Flowise — open source for prototypes
A visual builder for chains on LangChain. Free on your own server and strong at "an agent over our documents". Needs technical skills.
ChatGPT — a ready-made agent
ChatGPT's agent mode works in a browser on its own: it searches, opens websites and fills in forms. It is available on paid OpenAI plans.
How to choose a platform: five questions to ask yourself
- Where does the task live? In a conversation — a builder. In a stream of events between services — automation.
- Who will maintain it? No technical person — do not pick self-hosted.
- What comes out? If you need images, decks or voice-over, choose a platform where media are built in, not bolted on.
- How do you want to pay? A subscription, pay-as-you-go credits, or your own server plus model bills — each platform leans one way.
- Where does the data live? If it must stay on your own infrastructure, the answer is self-hosted.
