Improve photo quality with AI: what is recovered and what is invented

Improve photo quality with AI

A dark shot, a blurred face, a small file someone sent you in a messenger, grain on a night photo: these are all different jobs that people search for with one phrase. They are worth telling apart for one reason. Some of them are genuinely solved, and some are solved only because the neural network makes up what is missing. Both look equally good, so knowing what you actually got matters more than knowing which service made it.

The one sentence that matters

A neural network does not bring back detail that is not in the file. It draws plausible detail.

For landscapes, textures, foliage and architecture that is exactly what you want: the plausible detail is the result. For a face, a document, a number plate or small lettering it means the output will be similar, but different.

In the file: can be revealedNot in the file: will be inventedLight and shadow pulled from a dark shotColour and white balanceContrast and overall clarityMaking the file smallerSharpness on a blurred facePixels when enlarging a small fileSmall lettering, number plates, patternsTexture under removed noise
On the left is what the file already holds, and "enhancing" simply shows it. On the right is what the file does not hold: there the result is not recovered but made up. Both sides look equally convincing, and that is the whole difficulty.

Where to start: what exactly is wrong

"Improve quality" is at least six different jobs, and two of them are a different kind of operation altogether. Pick yours: below you get a straight description of what will happen to the file and a ready-made request.

What exactly is wrong with the photo

"Improve quality" covers six different jobs, and two of them are a different kind of operation altogether. Pick yours: below you get a straight description of what will happen to the file, and a ready-made request.

The model invents pixels

The model rebuilds the image and draws in sharpness that is not in the file.

What works well
Textures, fabric, foliage, architecture, wide shots: anything where a plausible detail is exactly the result you want.
What not to expect
Faces. Sharpness on a face does not "come back"; it is invented, and what comes back may be a similar person rather than the same one. The stronger the blur, the further the likeness drifts.

Ready-made request

Make this photo sharper and cleaner, keeping the frame exactly as it is. Do not change the composition, do not add objects, do not change facial features and do not recolour anything. Return it in high resolution.

Two operations that go by one word

"Resize" deserves a closer look, because it covers two completely different mechanisms, and one of them has a limit almost nobody expects.

Ordinary scalingWorks from the pixels you have. The content does not change at all.SHRINKING only. It refuses toenlarge: stretched pixelsare not quality.Runs locally, no separate charge.Rebuilt by a modelRedraws the picture at the sizeyou need, looking at yours.Any size, including larger thanthe original. Keeps proportions. In return it invents details thatwere not in the original.Choosing between them is not about quality, but about whether you accept invented detail.
"Resize" means two different operations. Ordinary scaling works from the pixels that exist and can only shrink. Enlarging is possible only by rebuilding, and then the file gains details nobody photographed.

The practical upshot: "increase photo resolution without losing quality" has no literal solution. Ordinary scaling cannot enlarge at all, and a neural network enlarges at the cost of part of the picture being invented. How to work out whether you need it in the first place is covered in enlarging a photo.

What decides the outcome

  • The original, not a forwarded copy. A file that has been through a messenger has already lost data, and the model will have to invent more. This is the one improvement that is almost always free: just find the original.
  • What is in the frame. Landscapes, fabric and architecture are the rewarding cases. A close-up face is the riskiest: that is where invention shows, and where it matters most.
  • How bad it is. Slight softness is fixed with confidence. A heavily blurred shot is not "brought into focus"; it is composed from scratch.
  • What you asked it to keep. The model tries not to touch whatever you list in words. Saying nothing means permission to change everything.

Where to go next

The chapters of this book take the cases one at a time; the full list is in the table of contents below. If your search had "free" or "online" in it, see improve photo quality online and free. If you need to print, see enlarging a photo. If the shot is blurred, see removing blur from a photo. If time has damaged it, see restoring old photographs. Colourising black-and-white photos has a chapter of its own: improve and restore a photo.

Frequently asked questions

How do I improve photo quality with AI?
Attach the photo and say what is wrong with it and what must stay the same, for example "dark and noisy, lift the light and remove the grain, do not change the face or the colours of the clothes". The neural network rebuilds the image with the light, sharpness or noise corrected. It helps to understand the mechanism: it does not bring missing detail back, it draws plausible detail. You can try it in the Twelver chat.
Is it still my photo, or a new picture?
It depends on what you asked for. Fixing light, colour and contrast works from what is already recorded in the file, so it is your photo. Sharpness on a blurred shot, enlarging a small file and recovering texture under noise are invented pixels: similar, but not exact. For landscapes and textures it makes no difference; for a face, a document or a number plate it does.
Can I increase photo resolution without losing quality?
Not literally. Ordinary scaling cannot enlarge at all: it works on the pixels that exist and can only shrink. The only way to a bigger file is a rebuild by a neural network, which draws in detail that was not in the original. Often no enlargement is needed at all: for print what matters is not the "DPI of the file" but pixels divided by print size, and you can work that out in enlarging a photo.
Why does the face look like someone else after processing?
Because sharpness on a blurred face is not recovered but invented: the model draws a plausible face, not the same one. The stronger the original blur, the further the likeness drifts. What helps: use the original file instead of a forwarded copy, ask for minimal intervention, and list outright what must not change: facial features, age, hairstyle.
What size will the file be?
You choose: 512, 1K, 2K or 4K on the side. The aspect ratio is kept automatically when a photo is processed, so nothing gets stretched and a portrait photo stays portrait. Larger sizes cost more: 4K is a little over twice the price of the standard 1K, and the chat tells you the exact price before processing.
Can an enhanced photo be used as a document or as evidence?
No. Everything the model drew in is plausible fiction, not a recovered record: a number plate, small lettering or a face will look sharp and may still not match the original. For anything where accuracy matters you need the original file; the processed one is only good as an illustration.

In the Twelver chat you can attach a photo and get it back cleaner, brighter or bigger: online, in one conversation, with no separate apps. Starter tokens arrive on your first visit, and signing up adds more.
