A neural network writes a song: lyrics and vocals

A song is two things together: words and music. A neural network now does both. You can hand over finished lyrics and ask for them to be sung, or generate both lyrics and music from a single idea. The most common request here is exactly "song lyrics by a neural network": words that sit on the rhythm and don't sound like a pile of rhymes from a generator.

Two paths to a song

  1. You have lyrics — you write the words yourself, the network composes the music and sings them. Maximum control over meaning.
  2. You only have an idea — you describe the theme and mood, the network generates both lyrics and music. Faster, but the lyrics are worth proofreading.

Most often a hybrid works: generate a draft of the lyrics, tweak it to taste, then send it off for music.

How to write lyrics that sing well

Song lyrics aren't a poem. A few rules that separate "sings" from "reads":

  • Structure. Verse → chorus → verse → chorus → bridge. The chorus is the most memorable part and repeats. Mark the sections (many services understand tags like [Verse], [Chorus]).
  • Rhythm beats a perfect rhyme. Lines of equal length sit on the music; a brilliant rhyme that misses the rhythm sounds worse than a simple one.
  • Simple, concrete images. "Rain on the glass" sings and sticks better than abstractions.
  • The chorus is one clear thought. Don't try to cram everything into it.

If you generate the lyrics

  • Set theme, mood and genre — "a sad indie ballad about a breakup" gives better lyrics than "write a song".
  • Ask for structure explicitly — "two verses and a chorus".
  • Proofread. AI lyrics often lean on clichés and strained rhymes — a couple of edits and they sound human.
  • Language. Modern models handle vocals in many languages well, but keep an eye on stress and pronunciation — sometimes it's easier to rephrase a line than to fight how it was "sung".

What's next

A song means vocals. But often you only need the instrumental: a beat for rap, a backing track for karaoke, or a bed. That's the next chapter.
