The best MCP servers in 2026: free and remote
The short version: a developer almost always wants four things — current documentation (Context7), a browser (Playwright or Chrome DevTools), the repository (GitHub) and web search. After that it goes by trade: Figma for interfaces, Supabase or Postgres for data, Sentry for errors, image and video generation for content. Below is a shortlist by task, marking which servers are free and which need nothing installed.
How to choose an MCP server
- Who maintains it. An official server from the owner of the service (GitHub, Figma, Notion) is updated along with its API. A third-party one can fall behind or disappear.
- Local or remote. A local one is free and sees your files, but needs Node.js, Python or Docker. A remote one connects by URL and works in Claude on the web. The difference in detail is in the overview of MCP servers.
- How many tools it has. Each one's description is sent to the model on every request. Forty tools "just in case" are worse than three precise ones.
- Trust. The model reads a server's answer as text and may act on instructions hidden inside it. Unvetted servers from random repositories are a risk.
For development
| Server | What it gives you | Type | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Context7 | Current library documentation by version — instead of the model's stale memory | Remote and local | Free with limits; a key raises them |
| Playwright MCP (Microsoft) | Driving a browser: open a page, click, fill a form, take a snapshot | Local | Free, open source |
| Chrome DevTools MCP (Google) | Debugging in Chrome: console, network, page performance | Local | Free, open source |
| GitHub MCP Server | Issues, pull requests, code and Actions from the agent | Remote and local | Needs a GitHub account |
| Filesystem | Reading and writing files in allowed folders — for clients with no disk access of their own | Local | Free, the protocol's reference server |
| Sentry | Production errors and traces straight into the agent's context | Remote | Needs a Sentry account |
| Supabase | A project's schema, tables, SQL queries and migrations | Remote | Needs a Supabase account |

For design and 3D
| Server | What it gives you | Type | What it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Figma | Layouts, components and design variables — the agent builds from the real design | Remote, and through the desktop app | Remote — on any plan; through the desktop app — a Dev or Full seat on a paid plan |
| Blender MCP | Driving a Blender scene in words: objects, materials, lighting | Local, community-maintained | Blender and an add-on; free |
For web search
Search is the most useful MCP server for almost any agent: a model knows the world only as of its training date. There are many options, and the choice depends on what you want to get back.
| Server | What it gives you | Type | What it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | A finished answer with sources, rather than a list of links | Local | A Perplexity API key |
| Brave Search, Tavily, Exa | Search results for the model; Tavily and Exa also extract page content | Local and remote | The service's API key |
| Twelver Web search | Search plus reading a page in full, as two tools | Remote | A Twelver account or key |
| Twelver Image search | Finding existing images through the Yandex Images index, including search by image | Remote | A Twelver account or key |

For content: images, video, sound
Here a remote server wins without qualification: generation needs a powerful graphics card and separate models, and over MCP it is one URL. At Twelver each engine is its own server — 26 of them in all, search and documents included:
| Task | Server | URL |
|---|---|---|
| Images and editing them | Nano Banana; Ideogram for lettering; Seedream for photoreal shots | https://twelver.app/api/mcp/v1/image-generation |
| Video from text and from an image | Seedance, Hailuo, HappyHorse; also Veo, Wan, Grok | https://twelver.app/api/mcp/v1/seedance-video-generation |
| Music and songs | MiniMax, Google | https://twelver.app/api/mcp/v1/minimax-music |
| Voice-over and voice cloning | Qwen TTS, Gemini TTS | https://twelver.app/api/mcp/v1/qwen-audio-speech |
| Transcribing audio and video | Speech to text | https://twelver.app/api/mcp/v1/speech-to-text |
What this looks like in practice is in image and video generation in Claude. For a local model the same set connects in LM Studio.
Free MCP servers: what is actually free
"Free MCP" comes in three kinds, and it helps to tell them apart:
- An open-source local server — Playwright, Chrome DevTools, Filesystem, Blender MCP. Costs nothing, runs on your machine; you pay only in computer resources.
- The official server of a free service — GitHub on an ordinary account. Free for as long as the service itself is.
- A server with a free tier — Context7, search APIs, generation. The free allowance is enough to get acquainted; real work needs a plan.
Twelver's servers are the third kind: a new account gets 250,000 tokens to try, after which all the servers spend one shared subscription balance. The Seedream, Ideogram, Grok (images and video), Veo, Wan sets are available on PRO and above.
Where to look for other servers
- The official MCP registry — registry.modelcontextprotocol.io, the catalogue kept by the protocol's authors.
- The connector catalogues inside clients — Claude, Cursor and VS Code have built-in lists of vetted servers with one-click installation.
- The modelcontextprotocol/servers repository on GitHub — the reference servers and a long list of third-party ones.
